Book Description

Move over Clapton! Doc Savage is God! Farmer is a great biographer! I learned everything about Doc I ever wanted to know! I even found out I'm a cousin of his!

4 out of 5 stars A Good "Scholarly Journal" For Learning More About the Bronze Man
Reviewer: Chuck Welch (flearun@yahoo.com)  1_stripes from Louisville, Kentucky      July 11, 1999
Here are the pros and cons of the book after actually using it to tour the places in New York City that "Doc" Savage lived.

Pros:

- Very informative "tidbits" of information about New York (i.e.: Hidalgo Trading Comapny History, Doc Tourist Traps, Dollars and Sense, and the "bad guys").

- Good information about how to pick a lock and escape from burning buildings if you don't know where to begin.

- Good information on the Flea Run (NYC mass transit system) and how to get around.

- Good information on Doc's old headquarters (hours and days open, cost, directions, etc.).

- Helpful planning sheets if you want to do you own two-hour exercises.

Cons:

- The size of the book is too big to fit easliy into a jacket pocket.

- The cover is fluorescent orange which screams "tourist" when you take it out in the Flea Run...I mean, subway.

- It focuses almost entirely on Doc Savage. If you want to get to know anything new about the aides you'll need the companion volume (The Spectacular Quintuple) that was rumored to have a mere 20 copy print run.

Overall a good first start for learning about the Man of Bronze. It provides the basic information, but I recommend you have an Oxford Unabridged dictionary on the nightstand.
